کهکشان راه شیری ، کهکشانی مارپیچی است که شامل حدود 500 میلیارد ستاره است. این کهکشان حدود 10 میلیارد سال پیش ، از یک ابر عظیم گاز و غبار تشکیل یافت. در قسمت مرکزی کهکشان راه شیری هسته‌ای کروی قرار دارد که ممکن است شامل یک حفره سیاه نیز باشد.
